Go to the new guestbook!
I've eliminated the link to add posts to this guestbook. The amount of junk posts was getting overwhelming and time didn't allow me to keep it as clean as it should be. The new guestbook link has replaced the old add link.

I have set up a new guestbook. You can find it at http://www.temagamivacation.com/guestbook/. I have added modifications to it to stop harmful scripts and allow me to verify posts by email notification before they go public to make sure nothing is posted to the site that could be offensive. Posts that haven't been verified yet will simple display an unavailable message until I activate it. Since I am rarely away, activation will be within a day most times. If things go smoothly without spam, I will turn off email verification so posting will be immediate. Please give me feedback as to what you might like to see added to the guestbook, or problems encountered. I plan on adding a button so users can choose to display their email address if they like - the default right now is not to display, and can't be changed. So if you want people to contact you, leave it in the comments box too. :)

Not sure how many of you have noticed, but the Temagami Guestbook has come under attack by spam bots that are pasting in piles of links to porn sites and other garbage. While I have removed these posts once noticed three times now, it is clear that this is going to be an ongoing problem that can't be solved unless the script is changed to prevent this type of thing from happening. While I am able to clear out these posts, I am unable to edit the script that drives this particular guestbook. I am willing to set up a guestbook for people to use, like this one, but with a different type of script that I can use and edit to respond to these types of threats. While I have strived to help out by creating a forum at my website at http://www.temagamivacation.com where your can keep in touch and ask questions, it hasn't recieved much use yet. If people are interested in a guestbook instead, or would like to see something like this guestbook continue without the garbage, please email me and let me know. If enough people respond, I'd be happy to try and set something up and keep it running.

I worked at Camp Wabikon during the summer of 1992; I had a great time and was able to really take in the lake, scenery, and the people. If I'm not mistaken, a couple from Southern Ontario (Toronto, I think) owned Wabikon at that time. One of the owner's was named "Margaret" and I forget the other person. While I was there there it was quite the international group of campers. I met people from Europe, the United States, and all over Canada. I hope the camp is still up and running and that people from all over have the opportunity to experience such a wonderful part of Canada.

It's been 2 years since I visited the Guestbbook. It helps to think of Temagami when the themometer outside my window reads 116 degrees! Ans I think of it when I swim daily in our pool, since I learned to swim in Lake Temagami in 1950! I'm still interested in Wabikon campers from those days. . .

During the mid 1940's, I visited a YMCA camp on Lake Temagami owned by the Cleveland YMCA. It was called North Woods. I know it no longer exists, but can you kindly tell me the island where it was located? I remember with fondness the great launches that would take us from downtown to the island. Anything you could provide would be greatly appreciated. We stayed at We are going to visit in the near future and stay at the Ttemagami Shores hotel.

Hello, My name is Fred Petrant. I was born in Temagami in 1958 in a log cabin. Moved away in 1967 but frequently reside in my hideouts around town and at the mine landing. I have resided on Bear Island for the last 12 years but have been banned from there for the last five years. But, I continue to visit there steady as my family history goes as far back to the 1870's. I am interested in taking people out on camping trips up to maple mountain The second highest point in all of Ontario! Also to historical sights on Lake Temagami to view our pictographs as well as our historical camp sites and famous battle grounds of the wars we had with the Iroquois in the 1870's. If you are interested in more history of the Temagami Indian's you can contact me by e-mail address and I will get back to you.

I was feeling a little "homesick" and thought I would drop by. Great site. Reading all the comments from all the people who have Temagami in their soul made me feel alot better. I was called to the Bar of Ontario a few years ago and am working in the Corporate Compliance field in Toronto with one of the Big Five Banks. It's been great. I grew up in North Bay and Temagami and spent much of my time in Temagami between the years of 1975 to 1987 (from about 4 years old to 16 years of age) and made many friends (Rodney and Waylon Johnson, etc.) while spending time at my grandparents place on the hill above the old Ted's Convenience Store. My grandmother, Mrs. Evelyn Hamilton lives in North Bay and my grandfather passed away on February 17, 2003. Both people, especially my grandmother, have been the most wonderful influences on my life and nurtured a love for Temagami that will be with me until I die.

My son is thinking of driving to Temagami over his Spring Break, to stay at his aunts cottage. He has been there before in early spring and there was a road open from the town of Temagami to Bear Island where he could snowshoe to the island. Yes, I knew that John. However, my family first moved to Temagami in 1947 where my Dad worked for L&F, today called MNR,so I'm looking for an earlier date than 1967, when Temagami must have been given the designation as a town. Incidentally, my first job, was at a store owned by Butch Spooner, called the Temagami Trading Post. I was in Grade 7, and worked every day after school, and all day Sat. My pay was $3.00 a week.

I am wondering when the spelling of "Temagami" was changed from "Timagami". I have a couple of historic artifacts that indicate the spelling as Timagami. One is an art etching titled "Islands in Lake Timagami" by Yvonne Kathleen Carr dated 1936, and the other is an old sterling spoon.

There was a boat called the Grey Owl that went all over Lake Temagami. It was really an original World War II boat that was used in a convoy to protect larger supplies carriers. This boat was purchased by the Ontario Northlands Railway and used to carry people and supplies to their camps on Lake Temagami. The driver I remember of this boat was a Temagami resident by the name of Joe Beaucage.

Holiday greetings from the west coast. I had the good fortune to visit Temagami this past summer with my dad, Bob Mitchell. We dropped in on a few of our old family friends, the Goddards and Bob Comstock to catch up on all the local news. I get back to North Bay fairly regularly to visit family and always like to hear from people back home. Have a great holiday season and a purposeful 2004. As a result of this site, I'm back in touch with my brother Steven, and also Gail Sutherland who lives out here and Mary Lalonde. Keep writing in.

WOW !!!!!!!!!!! What a trip back in time. Just found the site. Read about a lot of people and places that bring back a lot of memories. Sandra and I moved to Temagami in '73 and left in '78. Sandra was a teacher, and I a mechanic at "Garry's BP" and at "Milne and Sons Lumber Mill", and at "Temagami Marine" We lived in the street side appartment over the post office, across from the "White House" Must have been a sad day when it went down. Been through Temagami a few times in our travels, and still wonder at it's beauty. We are planning a 6 - 7 day canoe trip with friends in '04 in the Lady Evelyn area. Hope to hear from You.

Greetings from the other cottage country, Kazabazua Quebec.
Congratulations to all of those who ran in the recent municipal election. Win or lose, running for council is one of the most intense ways of fulfilling our civic responsibilities.
Congratulations also to those who won, (including my son Kelly). Hopefully this will be one of the best councils Temagami has had in some time. There are real opportunities out there again, and it's time Temagami grabbed the brass ring.

Hello to all. I finally managed to purchase a cottage on Lake Temagami. I fell in love with this lake the first time I saw it. The spirit of the lake has never left me. This is where my soul calls home. I look forward to meeting those who call it home as well. I would like to thank Don and his wife at Century 21 for all their help. I have traveled the lake many times over the years but it has always been during the summer. Now I wish to come during the winter. Our cottage is on Island 985 just southwest of Bear Island if any one could pass along some of the dangers and concerns of this area I would appreicate it. I have a Polaris Ranger ATV (with tracks )which when loaded is about 2,000 lbs. please contact me at pat.tretjack@sheridanc.on.ca

had some good times in Temagami!! i enjoyed my first hunting kill, managing to pick off a monstrous beastly squirrel from approximately 2.5 inches. speaking of two point five inches, my friend andy was with me on my second trip. in my time there, i crapped myself at 160 kmph across lake herage on a ski-do, fell asleep after 3 minutes of ice fishing, disabled myself by snow shoeing over the lake, needlesley (thanks robbie), was stalked by a killer mouse in the bedroom, fell out of a canoe, was dragged down a white water rapid river of death, pulled leaches from danielle's feet, was ten feet from death in danielle's car of horror, and was served by temagemi's most beautiful shop assistant. all in all, excellent. hope everything's good, and good luck with all that snow. Hello. I am a volunteer historian looking for information on a camp that existed many years ago in the Temagami area. It was called North Woods Camp and was owned by the Cleveland YMCA. It existed roughly from 1938 until it was sold in 1976. I would love to find any information on the camp during its operation and what became of the land and facilities. Please feel free to contact me at the email address listed. Thanks so much. Sincerely, Greg Measor

What a terrific webpage!
My husband and I were up at our cottage in Temagami Sept. 19 - Sept. 21. As always, it was wonderful to visit, however, a horrible vehicle accident occured on Sept. 20th just up the road (Hwy 11) from our cottage. The wheel from a transport truck came off and the truck hit an oncoming car (it looked like a white Taurus, but I'm not sure of vehicle model....it was crushed beyond recognition).
I was wondering if anyone knows how the truck driver and occupants of the oncoming vehicle are doing? Did they all survive? I saw the driver's airbag had deployed in the car, so there was possibly hope for the driver's survival. I sincerely hope that everyone survived.

Many years ago...I guess about 40 ish...my friend invited me to go with her family to Lake Temagami. We stayed in some cabins on a lake and had a most wonderful time. We met a girl by the lake named Rita and a bear came to our cabin! It was such a beautiful place...these many years later I remember it with joy. My friend's family were the Bartus family and her Dad fished for days.we sunned ourselves on a small dock and swam in the lake. Maybe someday, I will get to go back.

Hi All I was thinking of Temagami this morning and had to have a look at the site. I spent my childhood vacationing in Temagami and think of it often. Last year I had the oportunity to take my wife and son to Temagami for a short holiday. This year however we were unable to take holidays. Temagami is a beautiful scenic town and area with tons to see and do and is a wonderful change of pace from the ratrace of the city. So just wanted to say how much I miss it. Also if any of the old guests from Ridgewood Cottages see this and knew me or my parents (Gill and Irwin Gould) feel free to drop me a line. Thx and hope to see the area next year.

What a great web site! We were in Temagami at the beginning of the month. So good to visit family & old friends like Edna Widdifield & the Etmanskis. Nice to run into Lois & Maggie Charyna down at the lake. There's never enough time to see everyone but having coffee at the Shell usually means running into a few people! Hi to all. We miss the tranquility & slower pace of the north.

Hi: My friend and I are planning a little fishing trip in September. Could you advise me as to how I could obtain a good map of Lake Temagami? We will be going to the Loon Lake Lodge on Sept 9th. It is our first fishing trip. Do you know of an area guide? Thanks for you consideration of this request. Murray B.

An oil slick on the surface of a northern lake may help solve the mystery of the lumber tug White Bear and four men aboard her. A fleet of red canoes scouring Rabbit Lake is seeking such a slick or even bubbles of fuel oil from the diesel-driven tug's 200 gallon tank. Police say oil traces will probably afford the only hope of finding the White Bear, believed to have blown up last Thursday and gone down in 200 feet of water with all hands.
Missing and feared drowned are Leslie Taske, 23, captain of the tug;
Fred Kozik, 21, of Ottawa, woods foreman of the Gillies Brothers Lumber
Company; and lumberjacks Leonard Conroy, 19, and Edward Hamilton, 61.
Taske and conroy came from Quebec province. Hamilton, whose brother
Tom is in Sudbury, lived at Temagami more than 30 years. Tom Hamilton
began working at 72 Samuel St., bartender at the Queen's Hotel for 14
years, said he knew his brother was working in the Temagami Lake area
but he didn't know his brother was missing until called by a Daily Sudbury
Star reporter Sunday night. He said his brother was born at Gaspe, Quebec,
but worked as a lumberman in the Temagami district most of his life.
Another brother, James, lives in Port Arthur.
Taske was in his third year as skipper of the White Bear. The tug had
been in constant use since the spring break-up April 13.
The tug was towing a 23-foot six-ton boat when it set out Thursday on
an 18-mile trip from the Gillies Mill in a large log boom in the southeast
bay of Rabbit Lake about ten miles west of this Northern Ontario resort
centre and some 65 miles north of North Bay.
it is believed all four men were on the White Bear, which had a cookstove
and cabin facilities.

I was stunned to learn of Kim's sudden passing. There are not enough words to express how I feel. I really wish I would have been able to go to the service. Unfortunately, I did not know what had happened until the afternoon of the 14th.
I have known Kim since Kindergarten. I have so many memories of her. Like sitting behind her and Debbie for four years on the bus for the trek to highschool. I can still see them wrapped up in blankets with their coffees trying to stay warm on one of the many -30 mornings the heat on the bus didn't work. The Temagamians had it pretty tough in those days.
It's true what they say, only the good die young.
Kim.....you will be really really missed.

The last time I "signed" this guestbook I was in some frozen burg of a place in the Arctic, this time a frozen gulag of a place in Russia. Great to read through and see all the familiar names. Not as familiar as they should be though, as I don't get to "the Lake" as much as I should. That place is truly good for the soul.
I spend(mispend) my youth on Island 49, all summer, every summer, hanging out with some really great kids(probably all grey like me now)from the early sixties to the early eighties.(then I had to get a job)
Hello to the Mcleods, Lamonts, Hulls, Wyles, Northrops, Cunninghams, Woods, Kitts ,Websters, McCarts, Terrys and any one else I've forgoten.(age!!) Hope to have my old cedar strip running around on the lake again this summer.

When I was a small child, we would go to tamagami to camp in our trailor. Since then my parents have divorced, and can’t seem to get the information about where we stayed from either of them. This is what I remember (bits a pieces). A big white rock on the face of a hill, which was marbled with black. It was smooth and there was this other little girl there and we would climb to the top and slide down it. At the bottom was grass so tall it was almost over my head. I hid there from my mother once, she wasn’t too happy about it. In town there was a store with an ice cream shop in it that sold Tiger Tail ice cream (orange with liquorice flavour lines in it). I remember 2 docks at the campground, the one on the right was ok, and the one of the left was sinking. There was a boat storage area near the shore on one side of the docks. It was shallow there and there were some very large tadpoles I would always try to catch. There were large leaves of some plant near the boat area, where the other girl and I would take gravel and fill the leaf and try and sink it on a tadpole (we were 6 yrs old at most…). I remember there was a place to gut fish just to the right of the right dock. The water was cold, so we didn’t swim much. There was a museum, over some rapids or something (it seemed pretty high up to me, and it was hanging over the river). In the museum there were animal skeletons, but that’s all I remember. Any idea on where these places might be? I can be reached by e-mail.

As many know, Cobalt is celebrating 100 years this summer.
If you visit Cobalt's website at http://www.nt.net/cobalt/ and then click on guestbook, you will note if you look down 5 or 6 entries, a request there from Helen Culhane. She is asking for anyone who has some story of interest about Cobalt, the town, the High School, a memory highlight of an event, a store, etc,...she is hoping to assemble a book of these memories to be available this summer during the celebration. Please visit the website if you are interested and give it a shot, if you're so inclined. (Deadline is fast approaching so don't delay)

Hey Guys! You can still register for the Beard Growing Contest for this year's Winter Carnival. Get clean shaven today and then you don't have to worry about shaving for the next month and a half! Shave and then come on in to the Municipal Office and see me to register. The cost is only $5. For those of you who live out of town but plan on coming for the Winter Carnival (Feb. 21, 22, 23) all you have to do is shave and then take a picture of yourself with a digital camera holding a daily newspaper showing the date and e-mail it to me. You can pay your $5 registration fee when you arrive. Judging will take place Friday night after the opening ceremonies (Feb. 21) at the Old Tyme Bar at the Legion. Christmas and New Year's are over, let yourself go and register for the 2003 Beard Growing Contest for the Temagami Winter Carnival!
